Chris Bottomley Part 2 (Episode 24)
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
The distinctive funk, rock, reggae and jazz stylings of bassist, percussionist, singer and songwriter Chris Bottomley have been vibrating through Canadian music lovers for over 40 years.
Bottomley first burst onto the Canadian music scene in the mid-80s with his post-punk rock band Tulpa, who he formed with his brother John on guitar & vocals and drummer Mike Severin. Legendary New York City club CBGBs’ owner Hilly Kristol described Tulpa as “one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen.” Tulpa’s 1985 album Mosaic Fish earned the band touring dates, radio and video play, and media attention all across Canada and in 1988, they opened for punk-funk idols Living Color.
In the 90s, Bottomley was inspired by the fast-growing funk and groove scene in Toronto and started the Brainfudge collective that continues to this day.
Currently including Great Bob Scott (drums), Donne Roberts (African Guitar Summit, guitar) and Richard Underhill and Perry White (The Shuffle Demons, saxophones), Brainfudge’s illustrious alumni list includes a who’s who of top Toronto players such as Howie Beck (Mixed Feist, Communism, Buffy St-Marie) Odel Johnson (Messenjah, Mikey Dread), the late James Gray (Blue Rodeo), Eric St. Laurent, Bryden Baird (Feist) and many more. “The Fudge” lay Bottomley’s signature rock, Afrolatin and reggae-infused funk grooves thick and heavy, performing regularly at music clubs, festivals, and private events across Ontario. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Adrian Belew, Grupo Fantasma, and Souljazz Orchestra.
With Brainfudge, Bottomley has released four full-length records --1995’s self-titled debut Brainfudge, the internationally-acclaimed Knotty Bits (2003) which won a Unisong International Song Competition grand prize in the world-reggae category for ‘Belize City Bakin’, the 2006 double instrumental album Cerebral Lubrication which received airplay worldwide and his most recent album Bright Eye Day in 2014.
Over the years, he has played and collaborated with musicians such as Look People, Rich Underhill’s Funk Explosion, Donne Roberts, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Wayne Lavallee, Brother John Bottomley, The Kensington Horns, Asani, Andru Branch & Halfway Tree, Gisto, Michael Garrick, House of David Gang, FreeDubStar, Abjeez, Eccodek, Ainike, Boogiewall Sound System and The Mofunk Collective.
His songs ‘Seize The Day’, ‘African Head Dub’, ‘Brazilian Thunder Throb’ and ‘A Better Day Will Come’ have been placed in feature films and documentaries.
“A Better Day Will Come” appears in the film “A Masked Saint” (2015)

Introducing his solo project DUSTIN JONES bringing new music to the world that sonically integrates a hundred years of experience, with the kind of life only lived by the fearless.
Powerful music that asks and answers questions we all have about life, aging, love and the consequences of living life on the edge.
As the president and in house engineer/producer for Tidal Records based in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Canada, Dustin Jones, has lived his life by making things happen.
He approaches his new music, the same way he approaches his life, with a hardworking blue collar aesthetic that prevents him from waiting on anyone. He gets what he wants, because he goes after what he needs.

Dustin has built Mission Control Studios, Northern Ontario’s premier recording studio. Helping shape records for many amazing songwriters, as well as providing a home for other songwriters he believes in on his label Tidal Records.
Combining the passion he brings to his role with Tidal Records and Mission Control Studio with his experience as a front man and songwriter for bands like the Inner City Surfers, and The Rising Tide, and SIDEBLINDER complex musical layers and energy.
Dustin Jones has toured North America extensively and gotten to intimately know every dirt road, every sweaty club and every back door from end to end, cultivating personal friendships, and earning a reputation for playing as hard as he works, while building a network of incredible songwriters along the way.
Dustin’s solo project represents the fruits of many years on the road, and behind the console of his record company.

Glenn Milchem Part 2 (Episode 19)
Monday Aug 14, 2023
Monday Aug 14, 2023
Glenn Milchem cut his teeth playing drums with numerous bands based around Toronto's Queen Street scene from the early 80's to the early 90's. Some of the artists he played and recorded with during this period include Vital Sines, The Garbageman, Whitenoise, Groovey Religion, The Plasterscene Replicas, Andrew Cash, Change of Heart and Andy Curnew.
In December '91 Glenn was asked to join Blue Rodeo, another Queen Street band who had quickly outgrown their local beginnings to go on to national success. Glenn has remained a member for thirteen years. In the meantime he's continued to play with other bands, including his twin brother John's band Starvin' Hungry, The Remains of Brian Borcherdt, Holy Fuck, Luke Doucet and many others.
Throughout Glenn's career as a drummer he wrote his own songs on guitar, planning to start a project of his own one day. By 1997 Glenn finally felt he had a batch of songs strong enough to record and release. He decided to call the project "the Swallows," though he didn't have a band yet, and intended to play most of the instruments himself. He began recording at Toronto's Chemical Sound with engineer Al Miller, and guest contributor's Anne Bourne, Ian Blurton and Rich Brown.
The CD was eventually completed and released as "Turning Blue" in 1999 on Glenn's own label, Magnetic Angel Recordings, and Six Shooter Records. Between the records completion and release, Glenn put together the original line-up of the Swallows, with Glenn on guitar and vocals, John Borra on bass and vocals, Randy Curnew on drums, and Clive MacNutt on guitar. The band gigged regularly in support of the CD, gradually building a new set of songs and a new collective sound.
The Swallows returned to Chemical Sound in 2001, this time as a band, and with co-producer Ian Blurton along for the ride. Ian's knowledge, experience and willingness to experiment, along with stellar contributions from the new band members, helped make the resulting record a big step forward. Titled "The Beauty of Our Surroundings," it was released in 2002, again on Magnetic Angel, with distribution by Warner Canada.
Original guitarist Clive MacNutt left the Swallows in 2002 to be replaced by current guitarist Jonny James, causing the bands sound to evolve again, becoming tighter and punchier. After a year and a half of gigging, the band commenced making their 3rd album at Blue Rodeo's Woodshed Studio's in early 2004.
Recorded in the usual fits and starts, the record was completed at the beginning of this year, and represents a further stage in the bands evolution. Release is tentatively set for autumn 2005.

Mike McDonald Part 1 (Episode 16)
Friday Jun 16, 2023
Friday Jun 16, 2023
Veteran guitarist/singer Mike McDonald has been delighting audiences for over four decades.
A consummate performer, Mike has shared stages around the world with an “endless” list of musical icons from B.B. King, Three Dog Night, James Cotton, and Steppenwolf to spending a week in Kandahar playing for the troops - one of his proudest moments.
In addition to his music prowess, Mike is also a very talented audio engineer/producer, who ran Toronto's venerable Grossman's Tavern Sunday Night Jam for 13 years. He used his music smarts to mentor hundreds of musicians at Toronto's legendary “Home of the Blues” including Canadian mega talents like Jeff Healey, Allanah Myles, Michael Pickett and Tony Springer. Mike also produced albums “Grossman's Live 1” and “Grossman's Live 2” featuring Jeff Healey and Pat Rush (Johnny Winters, Muddy Waters, Dr John)
This musician's musician is also very adept at paying homage to the playlists of other bands and has been playing the role of John Fogerty in CCR Tribute Band, “Bayou Boys” for years.
In 2012, Mike added Keith Richards to his guitar slinger's repertoire in Rolling Stones songbook band The Beggar's Banquet.
On stage Mike McDonald IS Keith Richards from the bandana, and colorful “Keef” garb, to cocky rock royalty attitude, and his signature Red Tele and White Fender Strat which continues to create some of the finest Hot Licks of all time.
